Natural Gas and the future of fossil fuels

Natural gas has been the topic of discussion for most of the people across the US. This has been due to the speech of US President Obama, who has considered natural gas as the fuel which is likely to replace coal and crude oil for driving the US economy. The President has been in favor of natural gas because, as pointed by energy experts, he feels that natural gas will be sufficient to control the carbon emissions situation which otherwise would have been caused by the combustion of other types of fossil fuels like crude oil and coal. This has been welcomed by most of the energy and environmental experts, who see a great future for Americans through the usage of natural gas.

In the past, coal had occupied the elite position as America’s premier fuel source, until it was replaced by the fossil fuel crude oil. But the increased use of crude oil and natural gas has done harm to the world’s climate since there has been an increase in global temperatures. This has made many energy experts and scientists look for alternate types of fuels that could hopefully be more environmental friendly, and at the same time, equally efficient to crude oil. Their search has turned to be fruitful with the discovery of natural gas, which has been found to emit the least amount of carbon and other particulates into the earth’s atmosphere upon burning. This has given it the name of a “clean fuel,” and has made it quite attractive to the common man.

When compared to crude oil it has been found to be much cheaper and has the same calorific value with regards to crude oil. All these factors have made governments in many different countries of the world want to harness this wonder fuel. Based on this, the US government has shown a positive response to opt for natural gas in comparison to coal or crude oil. Though in the past, crude oil has been the most precious among the various fuel sources, its harmful environmental effects have turned many people against it. Coal, even presently, has been the number one type of fossil fuel used for the generation of the electricity all across the US. But with the entry of natural gas it could start to occupy a backseat in the near future.

Energy experts across the US have been very optimistic about natural gas, which will become very important in the years to come. Hence, the recent developments with regards to the natural gas sector have opened a wide market, with a majority of the oil drilling companies within the US showing their interest to the natural gas extraction process. Since the demand for natural gas is going to increase within a few years, almost all of these private natural gas drilling companies, along with those funded by the US government, have started to explore the potent gas fields across the US.
